Expose the rules
Like Deidre Somdah said, this is a great read. Maybe what I got to say ain’t profound, either, but we have to expose the norms that allow this cycle to go on. There’s subtle stuff we got to get at, such as how whites are so involved and caught up in whatever they’re doing with other whites that they foreclose the possibility of really understanding different perspectives. These micro-behaviors of exclusion are essentially unconscious because they’re so deeply cultural. In and of themselves they aren’t even ‘bad’ — it’s the effect in a pluralistic society that sucks.
