Classic Microvalidations: White Ways of Supporting Whiteness

Microvalidations are the subtle stuff that paved the way for this resurgence of white supremacy. “Looking the other way” and “laughing uncomfortably” are communicative messages that allow racist talk to continue. Racist talk is verbal violence that sets the stage for physical violence.

We whites need to discover and create more ways of talking with other whites about whiteness and the kind of world that creates the most nonviolence for everyone. Because there’s no such thing as violence against only some targeted groups. The more we oppress — the more we become potential victims of unexpected violence.
