…oad-based inequality that is concomitant with sustaining a status quo with its privileges. It would prove to be more fulfilling if attempts to negotiate diversity were instead replaced with the acceptance of such diversity.
Acceptance not negotiation
Nice move, Kevin, to build on Jeff’s foundation. Thinking there’s something to ‘negotiate’ about diversity is to keep dialogue locked into a power struggle over whose identity’s norms of interaction rule interaction.
If the starting point is acceptance, all the norms are up in the air and we can all figure out, together, how to do plurilingualism (communicating with differences instead of ‘in spite of’ them) instead of imposing/resisting homolingualism (the exclusive use of one language, with its specific norms and reference points).
Me and Soirée-Leone are slowing building an open dialogue to do just this over at Dark Allies.
